7 July 2026All About Shipping

The International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN) has released its 2025 Annual Review of SeafarerHelp, revealing significant challenges faced by seafarers. The report indicates a 35.9% increase in mental health-related contacts, reaching the highest levels recorded, with seafarers expressing concerns about stress, isolation, and family responsibilities. While new inquiries decreased, follow-up contacts rose, highlighting the need for ongoing support. Issues of abuse, bullying, and financial strain are also prevalent, with abandonment cases increasing by 41.2% in 2025. ISWAN is expanding its mental health support and developing initiatives to foster safer onboard cultures. The insights from SeafarerHelp will inform ISWAN's

future work and discussions at the International Maritime Organization starting in 2026.
