The implementation of the IMO Ballast Water Management Convention has highlighted operational challenges in ballast water treatment systems, despite most vessels being equipped with certified technology. Certification is not the issue; rather, failures often stem from crew procedures, maintenance, and environmental conditions at ports. Difficulties arise from high turbidity and sediment levels, particularly in river ports, which can overload systems. The IMO's 2024 guidance allows for temporary bypassing of treatment under certain conditions. Recent discussions at MEPC84 focused on enhancing type approval testing for challenging water quality. Additionally, real-time biological compliance monitoring is being developed to improve operational transparency. Port-side
treatment facilities are gaining traction as reliable alternatives when onboard systems fail. Compliance issues are primarily technical, with ballast water systems accounting for 46% of detainable deficiencies, emphasizing the need for better crew training and equipment maintenance.
