On July 6, 2026, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd announced a joint effort to resume operations through the Suez Canal and Red Sea as part of their Gemini Cooperation. This marks their second attempt in 2026 to reinstate routes in the region. The first service to be restored will connect Asia, the Mediterranean, and Turkey, with the Majestic Maersk, a 19,000 TEU container vessel, set to be the first ship on this route, expected to arrive at the Suez Canal around July 24. Maersk emphasized that this decision follows a thorough safety evaluation and aims to enhance transit times and operational efficiency.
However, the company remains cautious, stating that adjustments may be necessary depending on the evolving situation. The Suez Canal Authority has noted a gradual return of shipping traffic, with Maersk previously completing 1,158 transits in 2023.
